Nelspruit Hospice hosts fundraiser

- Ian Hugh Fleming

MBOMBELA - Nelspruit Hospice celebrated one of its last fundraisers for 2022 at the Greek Kouzina on Saturday.

The evening was a roaring success with about 30 people gathering for a night of Zorba, plate smashing, ouzo, divine Greek fare and the beautiful voice of local songstress Anne-Mari.

The CEO of Nelspruit Hospice, Landi Bezuidenhout, said hospice has had a good year with some worthwhile fundraisers and a continually supportive community coming to the financial assistance of those in dire need of palliative care.

“It’s the community that keeps us going and we’d like to thank Lowvelders, and the Mbombela community in particular, for their ongoing support. People’s pockets were badly hit by Covid-19 and I think if NGOs and NPOs are going to survive, we will need an umbrella body to which people can donate.”

Bezuidenhout will be investigating new funding initiatives in 2023.

In the meantime, the evening at the Greek Kouzina raised in the region of R4 000, which will help some of hospice’s running costs in December.

Bezuidenhout thanked Anne-Mari and the Greek Kouzina for adding to the joyful spirit of the evening.

“I’ve never drunk ouzo before,” she laughed. “My chest is burning.”

There is also a burning sense of pride in all who value the work of Nelspruit Hospice and who support its ongoing drives for further funding.
