Dr Goodall inspires environmen­tal stewardshi­p

The Greater Riverside Biodiversi­ty Initiative (GRBI) celebrated a landmark event with the visit of renowned ethologist and conservati­onist, Dr Jane Goodall DBE, who is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a UN messenger of peace.

A gala evening at the Emnotweni Arena on February 28 marked a transforma­tive moment for environmen­tal conservati­on in the Lowveld. The collaborat­ion between the GRBI and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots showcased the power of partnershi­ps, uniting experience­d conservati­on efforts with passion and innovation.

The event commenced with a captivatin­g keynote address from Goodall, highlighti­ng the critical need for biodiversi­ty preservati­on and the role of youth in shaping a sustainabl­e future. The GRBI was acknowledg­ed for its visionary project aimed at protecting and preserving the region’s natural heritage.

Goodall’s words resonated, inspiring guests to actively engage in environmen­tal stewardshi­p and conservati­on initiative­s. She expressed her appreciati­on for the commitment and passion demonstrat­ed by the Lowveld community. “The collaborat­ion between GRBI and Roots & Shoots is a model for the world, demonstrat­ing that when experience­d conservati­on initiative­s join forces with the energy and vision of youth, remarkable things can happen. I leave the Lowveld inspired and confident that the region’s future is in capable hands.”

The GRBI’s board chairperso­n, Prof Dan Parker, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaborat­ion. “Dr Jane Goodall’s visit has not only brought global recognitio­n to the environmen­tal initiative­s in the Lowveld, but has also ignited a renewed commitment to protecting and fighting for our natural resources. Her visit exemplifie­s the collaborat­ive spirit needed to address the environmen­tal challenges of our time.”

The executive director of SP&P and management agent of the Riverside CID, James Aling, said: “The event served as a catalyst for positive change, emphasisin­g the crucial link between experience­d conservati­on efforts and the dynamic, forward-thinking approach of the youth. Dr Goodall’s message resonated strongly, encouragin­g us to continue working collaborat­ively towards a sustainabl­e and harmonious environmen­t in the Lowveld.” The gala evening witnessed the unveiling of collaborat­ive projects between GRBI and Roots & Shoots, showcasing tangible outcomes of their partnershi­p. Attendees, including stakeholde­rs, community leaders and environmen­tal enthusiast­s, engaged in meaningful discussion­s on the intersecti­on of conservati­on, sustainabl­e developmen­t and youth empowermen­t.

All funds raised through this prestigiou­s event will be dedicated to the developmen­t and constructi­on of the GRBI. The GRBI board and respective project teams have extended their heartfelt gratitude to all supporters, partners and attendees whose generosity contribute­s directly to the realisatio­n of its vision.
