WHAT SKIN CONDITIONS CAN CBD RELIEVE?
A few small studies, including one that was published in 2019 in the journal Clinical Therapeutics, found that a CBD ointment helped clear skin and reduced itch in inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Studies are inconclusive in this regard, says Dr Karien Henrico, a senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg’s medicine faculty: Emergency Medical Care. One 2021 study found CBD improved inflammation, but it wasn’t clear which pathways it followed to bring about the improvement. A study about the skin’s absorption levels of CBD also couldn’t answer how exactly it works.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A TOPICAL?
Dr Henrico suggests choosing CBD isolate, the purest form of CBD on the market. The best format is a hydrophilic gel – in other words a gel that mixes well with water.
The product shouldn’t be waterproof (such as oil or butter), because then it won’t be as effectively absorbed by the skin. The raw, natural product is better than chemical modifications, she says. You must give it at least 21 days before expecting any improvements.
ARE THERE SIDE-EFFECTS?
There isn’t enough research yet to provide a definite answer, but it seems as if pure CBD is safe to use. But err on the side of caution and don’t use it if you’re pregnant, Dr Henrico advises.
SO, YAY OR NAY?
Though the research is still in its infancy and there are still many unanswered questions, early indications are that CBD skin products yield positive results.
“But there are also many other wonderful, raw substances that can treat anything from skin ageing to skin ailments,” Dr Henrico says.
“I still prefer something that’s backed by the science.”
