INDICA VERSUS SATIVA
The two main species of medical cannabis are cannabis indica and cannabis sativa.
There are noticeable differences between the two, both in appearance and on a chemical level. When making your cannabis extraction, one of your first decisions will be choosing which species best suits your needs.
CANNABIS INDICA
Indica strains generally have higher concentrations of CBD, so they tend to have more of a sedative effect, which is why they’re helpful in calming stress and anxiety and assisting with sleep.
Another of the many functions of CBD is to balance the effects of THC, so it’s a very different experience to a sativa high. An indica high tends to be mentally quieter and the body feels heavier and more relaxed.
Indica is great for muscle pains, stimulating your appetite and reducing anxiety. Indica plants are generally stockier than their sativa counterparts, with broader and darker leaves, and they usually give a smaller yield of flowers.
Indica strains can usually be described as having a sweet or fruity flavour.
CANNABIS SATIVA
Sativa strains tend to have higher concentrations of
THC and lower ratios of CBD and so they tend to be more mentally stimulating than indica.
Unlike the indica species, which will often result in “couch lock” (where you become too relaxed to go anywhere or do anything), sativa plants are quite the opposite, making you feel motivated, stimulated and energised.
Sativa strains are great for people suffering from depression, stagnation or pain.
The sativa plants are much taller and bushier than their indica cousins, with thinner, lighter coloured leaves.
It has a flavour that’s often described as earthy or peppery.
