AIR TRAFFIC AND NAVIGATION SERVICES

Rand Airport an on the job ATC training hub: Due to the high traffic loadings, close proximity of OR Tambo International Airport, ongoing use of cross runways and the number of active heliports embedded within the tower’s area of jurisdiction, Air Traffic controllers at Rand Airport have to, on a daily basis, manage a very dynamic air traffic control environment. The dedication of the staff and the quality of the training provided by ATNS has ensured that unit currently has a very high safety record.

The airport is considered one of the best training units for tower controllers and that is as a consequence of the environment and the traffic loading. The towers ‘present records include a busiest hour of 153 movements in one hour, which was set in November 2016 and equates to an aircraft taking-off, landing or overflying the airspace every 23 seconds. The busiest day recorded since ATNS has been providing the service at Rand airport was 644 flights in one day achieved in May 2018.
