Brakpan Vintage aircraft and AC Cobra day

- BY CHARLIE HUGO

American muscle cars with big rumbling powerful V-8 engines and after aviation flying, grabs the attention of most mechanically minded people.

The epitome of the American open sports car has to be the Carrol Shelby designed AC Cobra. The Brakpan Flying Club has had a history of organising various activities involving motorcar club gatherings at the airfield to provide a great opportunity to blend the passion of aviation with the more earth-bound motor cars. On Saturday 27 March, the club hosted this annual event at the airfield.

The latest event had various AC Cobra car clubs from around Gauteng congregate at the airfield to enjoy a morning breakfast and to showcase their immaculate sports cars. Well over 30 Cobras turned up with a pair of Ford’s greatest racing car, the GT-40 also in attendance. A number of interlopers also made their way into the display line.

Three aircraft from the Springs airfield based Classic Flying Collection flew in to bolster the historical and classic aircraft on display. This included a rarely seen Aeronca Champ. The perfect late summer’s day weather enticed a number of the local pilots to bring their own aircraft out to enable numerous photo opportunities to the many enthusiasts gathered. Proceedings wound down around midday with the visiting aircraft and those gorgeous rumbling V-8’s departing to their Homebase’s. This was a most enjoyable outing at this East Rand airfield.
