SAPS pays heavy price through crashes

A TO­TAL of 1 105 po­lice ve­hi­cles have been in­volved in ac­ci­dents be­tween April and May this year, while 126 ve­hi­cles were writ­ten off in the same pe­riod,

Po­lice Min­is­ter Bheki Cele was re­spond­ing to a ques­tion on the mat­ter from DA MP Erik Marais and also said that 88.25% out SAPS’s 47 740 ve­hi­cles were fit­ted with track­ing de­vices,

In a sta­tis­ti­cal break­down of ac­ci­dents in the past three years, Cele said that in 2015/16 a to­tal of 8 577 ve­hi­cles were in­volved in ac­ci­dents, in 2016/2017 the num­ber was 6 754 and in 2017/18 it stood at 6854.

Cele said the num­bers of ve­hi­cles writ­ten off be­cause they were beyond re­pair were 1126, 1354 and 1352 re­spec­tively.
