SEZ expected to create jobs
This was announced by economic development and tourism MEC Mac Jack during his budget speech yesterday
THE Upington Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is expected to create about 16 165 jobs during construction, 6443 sustained operational jobs and 6 003 indirect jobs and the total economy wide, direct, indirect and induced jobs are estimated at 28 611.
This was announced by the MEC of economic development and tourism Mac Jack, who presented his budget speech yesterday, he also said the total infrastructure expenditure is about R2bn during 15 years of development and a cumulative contribution of the proposed SEZ to the economy is expected to be R4.5bn over a period of 15 years.
“We will continue to exploit our comparative advantages derived from the spatial benefits of our regions as the anchors of economic development. In this context, the minister of trade and industry will be approached to gazette the Upington Special Economic Zone after evaluation and approval by the DTI,” he said. Jack said the department has 422 work opportunities that were created across the province through the EPWP grantfunding for 201718.
“Fifty youth were trained in Dikgatlong and Frances Baard on new venture creation through the Services Seta in collaboration with a local company accredited with the services Seta,” Jack said.
Furthermore according to the MEC, 15 youth and nine people living with disabilities were trained in pre-start up business skills in Upington.
Another 25 people were trained in basic computer skills in De Aar highlighting some of the work that was done by the department in the previous financial year. On township tourism Jack said it’s a sector which presents great potential speaking on attractions such as the walking trails that have been developed in Fraserburg, Williston and Sutherland.
Jack said more than R314m that has been allocated to the department for the 201819 financial year is a nominal increase of more than R18m a 6.2% increase on the 201718 financial year.
“A total of R65573000 is allocated to Administration, to provide strategic economic direction to the province and facilitate the implementation of our mandate,” he said.
