Cop questioned in connection with cash heist
A FEMALE police constable is being questioned in connection with a planned cash-in-transit heist which was to take place in the Marble Hall area this week.
Six suspects, including a kingpin, were arrested after the Limpopo and Mpumalanga police tracking teams received information about them scouting the route where a cash-in-transit vehicle would pass on Tuesday.
The suspects, who are known for other robbery cases, were cornered by the police. They tried to flee and dispose of their cellphones but were apprehended by the police.
The police commissioner’s spokesperson, Col Brenda Muridili, said: “Preliminary investigations led the team to police barracks where one of the arrested suspect’s girlfriend, a 37-year-old police constable, had parked a getaway vehicle for the suspects.”
She further said the police constable stationed at Motetema police station outside Groblersdal was being questioned in connection with the mission that had been foiled.
“Acting Limpopo provincial police commissioner Major-Gen Jan Scheepers has already started with an internal disciplinary process against the constable,” Muridili said.
National police commissioner Gen Kehla Sitole said: “We cannot continue to work with members in our ranks who choose to engage in criminal activities. We will take our blue uniform and give them an orange uniform.”
