Cop ques­tioned in con­nec­tion with cash heist

A FE­MALE po­lice con­sta­ble is be­ing ques­tioned in con­nec­tion with a planned cash-in-tran­sit heist which was to take place in the Mar­ble Hall area this week.

Six sus­pects, in­clud­ing a king­pin, were ar­rested af­ter the Lim­popo and Mpumalanga po­lice track­ing teams re­ceived in­for­ma­tion about them scout­ing the route where a cash-in-tran­sit ve­hi­cle would pass on Tuesday.

The sus­pects, who are known for other rob­bery cases, were cor­nered by the po­lice. They tried to flee and dis­pose of their cell­phones but were ap­pre­hended by the po­lice.

The po­lice com­mis­sioner’s spokesper­son, Col Brenda Muridili, said: “Pre­lim­i­nary in­ves­ti­ga­tions led the team to po­lice barracks where one of the ar­rested sus­pect’s girl­friend, a 37-year-old po­lice con­sta­ble, had parked a get­away ve­hi­cle for the sus­pects.”

She fur­ther said the po­lice con­sta­ble sta­tioned at Motetema po­lice sta­tion out­side Grob­lers­dal was be­ing ques­tioned in con­nec­tion with the mis­sion that had been foiled.

“Act­ing Lim­popo pro­vin­cial po­lice com­mis­sioner Ma­jor-Gen Jan Scheep­ers has al­ready started with an in­ter­nal dis­ci­plinary process against the con­sta­ble,” Muridili said.

Na­tional po­lice com­mis­sioner Gen Kehla Si­tole said: “We can­not con­tinue to work with mem­bers in our ranks who choose to en­gage in crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ties. We will take our blue uni­form and give them an or­ange uni­form.”
