PSL stars revisit NWU soccer roots
A NUMBER of former North West University’s (NWU) Soccer Institute players who now ply their trade at various top flight clubs in the country were back for an alumni gathering in Mahikeng this week.
The Soccer Institute held a gettogether function that saw numerous players, including five PSL stars, participating in two games of football and reminiscing about the good old days with the institute.
Among the notable alumni of the Soccer Institute who attended the event were PSL players Thabo Mnyamane of SuperSport United, Thabo Rakhale of Chippa United, Boalefa Pule of AmaZulu, Luvolwethu Mpeta of Platinum Stars and Xolani Mlambo of Orlando Pirates.
After playing the two football matches, one against the staff football club and the other against the current crop of Soccer Institute players, the guests enjoyed a braai.
Soccer Institute director Vuyolwethu Sambo, who is also a product of the institute, said the annual get-together enables alumni players to share their experiences with the players, as well as to celebrate the achievements of the Soccer Institute over the years.
“Since the inception of the Soccer Institute in 2007, we all have the responsibility and duty as former players in maintaining the spirit and culture of success,” Vuyolwethu said.
“Therefore, we annually invite all those who had the privilege to be part of the institute, whether they pursued careers in the corporate world or in football.
