Electrolytes

Bicycling (South Africa) - - Stories -

You’re a finely tuned machine, and electrolytes are the spark plugs that keep your engine humming on all cylinders. Scientifically, they are charged, water-soluble minerals that regulate muscle contraction, nerve transmission, fluid balance, and energy use. They’re essential for life, not to mention optimum performance. Sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are all electrolytes. A healthy diet is all you need for maintaining most of those levels for daily life and short rides. But you lose them – especially sodium – when you sweat. Experts recommend consuming about 500mg of sodium per hour when exercising in the heat. You can get that amount through a highersodium drink such as Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix.
