Join The Ride

Bicycling (South Africa) - - Contents - By Mike Finch

I FREAKIN’ LOVE PODCASTS. I love that I can listen to them when and where I want – riding my bike, driving my car, or just before I switch off the side light next to my bed. // I’VE LISTENED TO ALL MANNER OF SUBJECTS: INSPIRING RAGS-TO-RICHES STORIES,

BUSINESS SUCCESS INTERVIEWS, THE SECRET CURE FOR BUNIONS (AND I DON’T EVEN SUFFER FROM THEM!), and how hormonal changes affect women during pregnancy. This last one impressed my wife no end. //

I GET DRAWN INTO THIS EPISODIC CONVERSATIONAL WORLD EVERY TIME I GET INTO MY CAR – AND THE SUPPLY OF SUBJECTS AND CONVERSATIONS IS SO VAST, I’LL NEVER RUN OUT OF THINGS TO LISTEN TO. //

In the last four years, the number of people listening to podcasts has doubled; and many of them are successful millennials, eager to explore and learn about their individual interests, while moving away from tired traditional radio drivel.

// PODCASTS ARE COMPLETELY PORTABLE, AND I KNOW PLENTY OF COMMUTER RIDERS (INCLUDING

ME) WHO LISTEN TO PODCASTS ON THEIR RIDE HOME INSTEAD OF THE MUSIC WE USED TO LISTEN TO. (SAFETY NOTE: ONLY PUT IN ONE EARBUD – IN THE LEFT EAR – SO YOU CAN STILL HEAR THE TRAFFIC.) // At Bicycling we like to think we’re slightly ahead of the curve; we produced our first series of podcasts in 2015, entitled ‘How to Climb Like A Boss’. (YOU CAN LISTEN TO THEM ON SOUNDCLOUD, OR LOOK THEM UP UNDER ‘BICYCLING SA’ ON ITUNES.)//

MOST RECENTLY I’VE BEEN DIGGING INTO THE MYRIAD GREAT CYCLING PODCASTS OUT THERE, FROM PRO RIDER INSIGHTS TO TRAINING ADVICE. SOMETIMES I DELIBERATELY RIDE MORE SLOWLY, JUST SO I CAN LISTEN TO THE END OF AN EPISODE. (IN CASE ANYONE’S WONDERING, THIS ALSO EXPLAINS WHY I ALWAYS GET TO WORK LATE!) // BUT AS MUCH AS THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF BRILLIANT CYCLING-RELATED PODCASTS, WE AT BICYCLING ALSO RECOGNISE THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SUBJECTS STILL TO INVESTIGATE. //

So in the next few months, we’re going on a podcasting mission. We plan on answering the questions we’re asked most often, reviewing tech and gear, and interviewing many of SA’s top riders just for a good dose of inspiration.

// DROP ME A LINE AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU’D LIKE TO HEAR US TALK ABOUT, SO WE CAN GET PLANNING.
