RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME FOR VAN DER BREGGEN
Van der Breggen was part of a super-strong Dutch team that controlled much of the race. She made the break to the strong lead group at halfway, to ensure the Dutch team were well represented on a route designed for climbers. Pre-race favourite Annemiek van Vleuten crashed early on and was clearly shaken, leaving Van der Breggen with the task of leading the charge for the orange-clad team. Van der Breggen’s eventual gap over second-placed Amanda Spratt was one of the biggest in decades.
