Bicycling (South Africa) - - Gear Of The Year -

When it comes to shoes, Lake Cycling is one of the few specialist cycling shoe companies out there. On their top three models, they now offer their online full customisation process locally. Yep, you can spec material, colour and soles from a variety of options… making you as pro as Sagan himself.

The models available for customisation aren’t cheap though. But the variety is good: throughout the range, Lake have a wide range of colours and size curves available. Any foot can find a home with four colour combinations, two width options (normal or wide) and 17 size combinations, from 39 to 47.

A wider toe box and front foot area provides protection where it’s needed, but also keeps the dreaded hot foot at bay. Full-grain leather makes up the upper sections, with some mesh ventilation. Fit is consistent, thanks to dual Boa dials and closure laces.

One nifty detail is the addition of mesh drainage holes fore and aft underneath the carbon soles – a boon on wet rides and river crossings.
