After five years of conceptualisation and 18 months of development, Victor Momsen is understandably proud of his latest creation, the Vipa Ultra. With a ground-up design and real-world prototype testing, it’s a bold move for the PE-based company. First glimpses of the Ultra were seen at the Cape Epic. It was piloted by Team Imbuko riders Dylan Rebello and Marco Joubert, who finished a remarkable 17th on the overall GC despite their relative lack of experience. The production models feature more subtle graphics and refined frame features, while a flip chip on the shock mount allows subtle adjustments to geometry. The frame has space for three water bottles, and two integrated storage compartments to take on food, spares and tools. As far as Momsen is concerned, this South African-born and -bred bike is the first true stage-racing superbike. Momsen made the Ultra available as a frameset in 2018, but more tailored options are to follow in 2019.
