Continental tyres are stalwarts of cycling, and the Continental GP 4000 S is their flagship all-rounder. The newer 4000 S II is the latest facelift, with newer compounds and puncture protection.

The addition of BlackChilli compound ensures high mileage and reduced rolling resistance, while still increasing grip. Conti have also added a Vectran belt beneath the tread, for puncture resistance – Vectran is a lightweight, flexible liquid-crystalline polymer.

The Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II comes in 20c, 23c, 25c and 28c volumes. Our test pair were the 28c, and were perfect for comfort and control. They are supremely supple, feeling almost like tubulars.

The profile supports low rolling resistance, and corners hold no issues, apart from thick loose gravel corners with potholes! There may be some overall loss of speed compared to the 25c volume, but it’s negligible really, and a fair trade-off. Come race day – or 100milers – these will still be a personal first choice.
