THE FEWER CARSON THE ROAD, THE BETTER. RIDING TO WORK IS FUN, HEALTHY AND EXCITING, ESPECIALLY IF YOU PLAN AN URBAN ASSAULT ROUTE THROUGH PARKS AND ALONG BY WAYS TO ESCAPE TRUCKS AND TAXIS. UNLESS YOU LIVE ONTO PO FA MOUNTAIN, SINGLE SPEED IS THE WAY TOGO. YOU HAVE FEWER MOVING PARTS THAT REQUIRE MAINTENANCE, AND THERE’S A GLORIOUS FREEDOM IN JUST JUMPING ON AND LETTING RIP. IT’S EASY ENOUGH TO CONVERT AN OLD STEEL-FRAME RACE BIKE INTO A SINGLE SPEED( ASK YOUR LBS ), BUT IF THAT SOUNDS LIKE TOO MUCH AD MIN THEN CAPE TOWN BASED ROOK CYCLES SELL SA KILLER COMMUTER CALLED THE ROOK ONE. IT’S INEXPENSIVE, EASY TO ASSEMBLE OUT OF THE BOX, AND SHIPPED FOR FREE TO ANYWHERE INSOUTHAFRICA. HERE ARE SOME OF THE REASONS WE LIKE IT.

Steel is real. Look after it, and the frame will last as long as you do. (It actually comes with a lifetime warranty.) We love the matte-black paint job; you can also order ‘not red’, orange, white, or glittery blue.

Choices… With a flip-flop hub, you can run your Rook as a singlespeed freewheel (17T) or fixed (16T). There’s a front brake if you’re riding singlespeed, but you know you should be riding fixed. Don’t be scared.

The right rubber. WTB ThickSlick tyres come standard, on deep-section rims. They’re fast-rolling, and offer good puncture protection. Just what you need to get to work with minimal hassle.

Hold tight. The riser bar gets you into an upright position for better visibility in traffic.

Deal. All this for only R5 450!
