SPREAD THE STOKE IF RIDING TO SOMEONE NEW

- – Caitlin Giddings

F Be it a child, family member or friend, if you’re helping someone else get started on a bike, these are helpful beginner tips to share:

• Make sure you can stand over your bike without the top tube pressing into you. If you can’t, pick a smaller size. Remember, proper bike fit is important. You should be able to reach the handlebars and brakes comfortably.

• Look towards where you want to go rather than focusing on obstacles to avoid. Your bike will move in line with your vision, so if you don’t want to hit that tree or pothole, don’t look at it. Keep your eyes up and always look a metre or two ahead instead of down, to hold a straight line and maintain balance.

• When in doubt, just keep moving. Forward progression and speed are your friends when learning to balance on a bike.
