Talented actresses Mapaseka Koetle-Nyokong, Gugu Gumede and Linda Mtoba tell us about their journeys in the entertainment industry

THE RISING STAR

Mapaseka was born and raised in Bloemfontein in the Free State. The actress has been creating a lot of buzz over the years for her portrayal of Dintle on e.tv soapie Scandal!. What started out as a small role in 2011 has blossomed into a seven-year acting career.

BORN TO ENTERTAIN

From humble beginnings, Mapaseka was raised by an unemployed single mother. Although life was tough, she says there was always food on the table, filled with her mother’s love. A quiet child growing up, it was only in high school that she saw a change in her personality. “When you’re of primary school-going age, you don’t know who you are as your personality is not yet fully developed. But, things changed when I got to high school. I learnt how to get out of my shell, and that was fun,” she says.

THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

Mapaseka got her first taste of acting when the outcome-based education curriculum was introduced at her school. It allowed her to take arts and culture classes. And during her teen years, she realised that she wanted to pursue a career in acting. After matriculating in 2006, she successfully applied for a student loan. Two years later, she moved to Johannesburg to study at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA). “I did my first year at AFDA. But because it was expensive, I had to continue at City Varsity. I graduated in 2011 with a diploma in acting for camera.”
