JAWITZ Properties is one of three top agencies marketing the most expensive, luxurious property to come on to the residential market. This 7,130m² palatial residence, known as Enigma Mansion, is situated in the most prestigious and prime residential area of Cape Town, between Clifton and Camps Bay and comes with a price tag of R300m.

The property in its entirety takes up four erven between three streets in the most sought after area of Camps Bay, The Glen, best known for being a luxurious, peaceful haven, sheltered from Cape Town’s ferocious wind.

Just 50m from the base of Table Mountain Park and adjoining a nature reserve on two of its other boundaries, Enigma has 6,000m² of outdoor space including parks and gardens with attractive waterways and ponds.

“Despite its private location, the bustling restaurants and cafés along Camps Bay beach are just three minutes away, bringing convenience to this dream coastal lifestyle that Enigma Mansion epitomises,” says Francois Venter, director of Jawitz Properties.

The main residence has three floors and stretches over 1,586m², with a 627m² basement level, ground floor totalling 638m², and first floor covering 321m². A studio at the bottom west side of the property has its own street access with living space of 264m² spread over the ground and first floors, and there is a separate guest house on site with private street access covering 250m².

The residence offers an atelier, winter garden, sauna, gym, teahouse, massage temple, staff quarters, herb and vegetable garden and terraces, with the highlight being an Olympic-size swimming pool with marble inlays.

Project manager Dave Fichardt of Glo Projects says that the company was tasked with delivering the vision of the client to create something remarkable. “The client had a clear idea of what he wanted as a finished product and, as a result, this presented many challenges that needed to be co-ordinated and overcome.”

Fichardt says the style of Enigma was inspired by an internationally acclaimed interior designer, Jacques Garcia. “This was truly an international project with the majority of installed products sourced from all over the globe. A remarkable feature is that all the timber throughout the property is hand-carved reclaimed teak from Bali. All doors, architraves, door surrounds, pelmets, wall panelling, wall-in-closets and more were carved by hand to different styles required by the client.

Individual products were sourced, shipped, co-ordinated and installed from more than 14 countries including SA, the US, Argentina, the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Pakistan, Indian, Thailand and Indonesia.

“The residence is one of a kind in SA and finished to the highest standard of wallpapering and fabric available anywhere in the world. The kitchen is from Paris, another first for SA. The home automation is highly sophisticated and enables the client to log into the house from anywhere in the world,” Fichardt says.

Enigma houses every possible luxury, from its state-of-the-art technology system with iPads controlling all the functions throughout the property, an 80m² 3D cinema, and an extensive selection of artwork from paintings and photographs, to sculptures and statues, some of which were created especially for this home.

The home boasts spectacular sea and mountain views of Cape Town’s famous landmarks — Lion’s Head, Table Mountain, The Twelve Apostles and the ocean — from every vantage point.

The décor is an eclectic mix of classic, French, Asian, Georgian colonial, and Moroccan influences, with luxury fitted into every detail. Taking inspiration from the Louis XIV period and Hotel Costes in Paris, the interior features were chosen for their beauty and opulence, with no expense spared and include bespoke, imported wall fabrics, curtains, rugs and antique fittings and finishes.

The property benefits from 24hour armed response and 36 cameras monitoring the grounds. There are electronic safes in each bedroom, as well as panic buttons, and a “panic room” in the master suite. For extra peace of mind, 16 security guards patrol the premises 24-hours a day.

With a glamorous history, Enigma Mansion has previously acted as accommodation for A-list celebrities, artists, CEOs of big corporations, royalty and other high net worth individuals, and has been used for photo shoots and as a movie location.

Enigma is owned by an offshore company that wanted to build a dream home in Africa. Four different stands were purchased over the years and existing villas were pulled down to create Enigma. It took seven years to plan and four years to build.

A tough choice to make in a home that has it all, but the owner’s favourite features are the cinema and the swimming pool.

“Enigma is unlike any other residence in SA and can only be compared to extravagant homes in the South of France, Beverley Hills or Long Island. Enigma Mansion defines an unsurpassed, luxurious lifestyle and is a home making history in the South African property market,” says Venter.
