A democratic milestone
TWO decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia has passed an important milestone in its journey towards democracy. By conceding defeat in Monday’s parliamentary elections, President Mikheil Saakashvili has the opened way for the first peaceful transition of power in modern Georgia’s history.
Saakashvili has done the most to bring western-style democracy to Georgia. He has been a powerful force for modernisation of what was a failed state when he took over in 2003. But his term has not been without blemishes. He has been accused of increasing author- itarianism and Transparency International has raised concerns over continued cronyism.
Little is known of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who will now form the next government. His vision for the future is unclear beyond the fact that he wants to tackle poverty and improve the tense relationship with Russia. The most immediate challenge will be to ensure a peaceful transition of power. This will require rivals to work constructively during what could be an uncomfortable few months of cohabitation before the presidential election next year. London, October 3
