Uruguay legalises gay marriage

The Uruguayan parliament has voted in favour of legalising gay marriage, making Uruguay the second South American country after Argentina to adopt such a law. President Jose Mujica had backed legislation to grant gay and lesbian couples equal marital rights to heterosexual partners. Argentina legalised samesex marriages in 2010.
