Thatcher caused harm

-

DEAR SIR — “A better world thanks to Thatcher” (April 10) refers. Greed, never-ending wars and the world’s present financial crises are Ms Thatcher’s legacy. None are praise-worthy attributes.

I spent four months in London in early 1974 during the time of the threeday week. Quite apart from the damp and cold, there was no electricity, no toilet paper, no sugar, no garbage collection and the trains barely worked. It confirmed for me that England of the trade unions and Labour Party was chaotic, and was a place where I certainly would not wish to live.

Drastic economic reform was urgently needed, but Ms Thatcher instituted the corrupt dog-eat-dog society and world that we now deplore.

Repeated bank scandals confirm the City of London as the most corrupt square mile anywhere on the planet earth. Her legacy also includes BAE, which is organised crime on a scale that makes the Italian mafia look like saints.

Her politics were continued by Tony Blair — whom many people believe should be tried by the International Criminal Court for war crimes — and now by David Cameron. Enough said! Terry Crawford-Browne Cape Town
