Ndou ready to give Pohamba ‘a hiding second to none’
IF PHILLIP Ndou does in the ring on Saturday night what he has been doing in the gym, then Namibians will regret signing up the knockout artist to fight their prospect Pohamba Mandume, warns trainer Bernie Pailman,
‘‘I am not sure if the Namibians think Phillip is washed up as a fighter or what,” said Pailman. ‘‘The truth though is that if Phillip does in the fight what we’ve been doing in the gym, then Pohamba will get a hiding second to none. Phillip has been hard in the gym since early last month. It is just a matter of going out there and pull it off.”
Ndou, who goes by the moniker of Time Bomb, boasts 32 short-route wins from 34 victories against four losses while Pohamba has only five wins from nine fights.
The former South African and World Boxing Association intercontinental featherweight and World Boxing Union junior lightweight has fought top fight- ers including Floyd Mayweather and Lovemore Ndou. He will meet Pohamba over eight rounds at Sam Nujoma Stadium, Windhoek in Namibia. The bout will be the main undercard to the International Boxing Federation light-heavyweight fight between Namibian Harry Simon and Geard Ajetovic from Serbia.
Pailman, Cliff Martins and Peter Faver guided Ndou to a fifth-round impressive stoppage in his comeback fight against Pius Dipheko in June.
‘‘Phillip had both light- and heavy-sparring sessions. He is so determined he has never bunked training since we started preparing for this fight. I did nothing really except to work on his speed. Phillip has his own style which suits him,” Pailman said.
The charismatic fighter from Thohoyandou said he was treating his fight as a warm-up before challenging the winner of a bout between welterweight champion Tsiko Mulovhedzi and Ntuthuko Memela.
