No politics in Hawks’ probes — Ntlemeza
Embattled head of the Hawks Gen Berning Ntlemeza told Parliament’s police committee on Friday that there was no political influence in the probes of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks. He is facing possible removal from office following a court application from the Helen Suzman Foundation and Freedom Under Law, arguing that two previous courts found him unfit to hold office. Judgment in the matter was reserved on Wednesday. The Hawks have come into focus recently, particularly over what appeared to be mistimed demands for information from Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan regarding the socalled “rogue unit” at the South African Revenue Service.
