Tretchikoff’s Hindu dancer up for grabs

-

TRETCHIKOFF’s The Hindu Dancer, valued at R1.2m-R1.6m, will be auctioned next month.

The Stephan Welz & Company Fine Art & Collectables Auction will take place at Nelson Mandela Square, fourth floor South Tower in Sandton, Johannesburg, on May 10 and 11.

Viewing is open to the public from May 4-9.

The Hindu Dancer, with its four waving arms and carefully poised hands makes reference to Hindu Shiva icons that are forever engaged in a cosmic dance, says Anton Welz.

Of a more classic nature is Maggie Laubser’s Cape Dutch House with Trees, estimated at R110,000-R150,000.

Jacob Pierneef’s sweeping landscapes, such as his 1927 work Veldlandskap, which has an estimated value of R150,000-R200,000, are a window into his reverence for the beauty of the bush, said Welz.

Freida Lock’s Zanzibar is an evocative look at a Zanzibar street scene. Lock enjoyed an extended stay in Zanzibar in the late 1940s, which is where she produced some of her most noteworthy street scenes and portraits. Lock used the carved Zanzibari door frame strips to frame her works. The painting, in its original frame, is valued at R500,000-R700,000.
