Land policy a disaster

-

SIR — I trust all those who admire Robert Mugabe’s land policy have taken note that employees of the state in Zimbabwe are now being paid $100 (R1,500) a month. Surely even Julius Malema now realises the policy of taking back “stolen” land without compensation has caused the destruction of Zimbabwe’s economy.

Although primary agriculture is only 3% of our economy, it constitutes a link in the chain starting from the supply of such things as equipment and tractors, medicines, feed and fertiliser down to the transport, preparation, packing and retailing of food locally, not to mention exports.

The agribusiness sector is a large component of our economy, employing several million people. All this would be lost if primary agriculture fails. Can any sane person support the seizure of all white-owned farms? Willem Cronje Via e-mail
