Govern­ment de­part­ments have told the South African Hu­man Rights Com­mis­sion (SAHRC) that they are be­com­ing in­creas­ingly suc­cess­ful at over­com­ing dis­jointed re­spon­si­bil­i­ties re­gard­ing the so­cioe­co­nomic ef­fects of min­ing on com­mu­ni­ties. The SAHRC is con­duct­ing pub­lic hear­ings on is­sues fac­ing min­ing com­mu­ni­ties, rang­ing from wa­ter qual­ity to the eco­nomic im­pli­ca­tions of the in­dus­try.
