McCaw’s 1954 oil on board fetches top price

Terence McCaw was in the spotlight at the Westgate Walding Fine Arts and Decorative auction in Waverley on Wednesday. McCaw’s oil on board Portrait of an African Woman, signed and dated 1954, was knocked down for R48,000, the highest price in the art section.

Of interest too were Erich Meyer’s oil on board Trek Campsite, signed and dated 1950 (R6,500); Charles van der Merwe’s Stellenbos­ch Street Scene, a signed oil on board (R1,300); FE Martinez’s Camel Rider and Shepherd, Algeria, a signed oil on panel (R1,400); Gian-Piero Garizio’s signed oil on board Cape Homestead in Landscape (R2,800); Simon Parkin’s signed watercolou­r Farm Outbuildin­g (R3,500); and Eli Kobelli’s mixed media Musician and Dancing Figures, signed and dated 1968 (R2,000).

Among the foreign artists were Tsuguhara Foujita’s Japanese signed etching Figures Beside Clock Tower, signed and dated 1925 (R3,500); British artist Edward Weller’s coloured engraving Cape of Good Hope and Natal (R3,200); and Italian artist Marino Marini’s etching Abstract Horse Rider, signed and numbered 24/60 (R4,800).

Other artists of note include Gabriel de Jongh (signed oil on canvas, River In Mountainou­s Landscape — unsold); Henry Dykman (signed oil on board, Cape Farmhouse in Treed Landscape — R3,500); Maud Summer (pen and ink, Seated Man reading — R5,800); Bettie CilliersBa­rnard (set of five prints signed and numbered 40/100 — R3,000); and Cecil Skotnes (woodcut signed, dated 1973 and numbered 19/45 — R2,000).

An Edwardian inlaid mahogany long case clock and an 18th-century English oak long case clock by John Buffet, Colchester, were the standout pieces in the furniture section. The clocks fetched R19,000 and R12,000 respective­ly.

Attracting interest too were a 19th-century finely carved walnut bed (R18,000) and a Regency rosewood sofa table (R20,000). Other attractive pieces included a set of five 19thcentur­y carved oak dining chairs (R13,000); a 19th-century carved oak extension dining table (R5,000); a 19th-century oak buffet (3,500); and a Victorian mahogany Pembroke table (R4,200).

Belgian oak pieces included a 19th century chest of drawers (R4,000) and an early 20th-century centre table (R4,000).

More unusual was a late 19th century Chappell & Co upright burr walnut piano (R2,500).

In demand too were a Victorian burr walnut card table (R9,500); a pair of 19th-century carved oak carvers (R9,500) and an early Victorian carved oak fire screen (R4,200).

Centrepiec­e in the collectabl­e section was a large 19th or 20thcentur­y Meissen porcelain tre tier figural tazza (unsold).

A mid-20th-century American sterling silver bowl, Tiffany & Co (R2,800) was ncluded in the range of silver pieces and a fine late Victorian silver convertibl­e tale/hand mirror (unsold).

A standalone piece was an Art Deco Carlton ware lustre vase (R2,200).

More unusual was a large early Chinese carved ivory figure (R2,000) and a pair of early 20th-century amber overlaid glass table lustres (unsold).
