Art attracts five-figure attention

• Works by Boonzaier, Pierneef and De Jongh go for more than R20,000

Works of Gregoire Boonzaier, Tinus de Jongh and Hendrik Pierneef all fetched five-figure bids at the Westgate Walding Decorative and Fine Arts Sale at Waverley this week.

Boonzaier’s watercolou­r Cape Harbour fetched R22,000, De Jongh’s signed oil on board Cape Cottage in Mountainou­s landscape, R31,000, and Pierneef’s charcoal heightened with white, Figure beside Rural House, R22,000.

Also in the higher price range were Terence McCaw’s oil on board Near Maseru (R14,000); British artist John Speed’s engraving circa 1626 Africa (R19,000); Walter Battiss’s lithograph signed and numbered 4/30 The Jumpers Deep GM Coy Johannesbu­rg (R11,500) and William Kentridge’s lithograph poster signed and numbered 96/220 The Magic Flute 2007 (R8,500).

Other notable works included Francois Krige’s unsigned oil on board Still Life of a Rose in a Jug (R7,500); Erich Mayer’s watercolou­r signed and dated 1934 Baobab Trees (R4,200) and Ruth Squibb’s oil on board Rocky Coastline (R3,600).

Of interest, too, were Christophe­r Tugwell’s signed oil on board Gum Trees in Extensive Landscape (R5,500); Emily Fern’s oil on board Still Life of Flowers (R1,900); Otto Klar’s oil on board River in Bushveld Landscape (R7,200) and Jean Jansem’s watercolou­r Still Life of Flowers and Vases (R2,200).

Unusual items in the furniture section were an Edwardian oak dental cabinet (R2,600) and an Art Deco enamelled dental cabinet made by the American Cabinet Co. Features on the cabinet include a pop-up bottle holder and 20 assorted short drawers on a black plinth base and castors (R4,600).

A Victorian burr walnut Collard & Collard baby grand piano in a distressed condition fetched R25,000.

Other pieces that came under the hammer included a Victorian rosewood centre table (R1,220); a Victorian mahogany secretaire bookcase (R9,500); a 19th century Dutch oak bookcase (R6,800) and an early 20th century oak desk (R7,200).

Of special interest was a 20th century Hans van der Merwe mahogany military-style cabinet, which was knocked down for R10,500; a vintage Danish teak dining table and four chairs (R68,000); a Danish teak sideboard by Brande-Mobelindus­tri (R19,000); and a vintage Fritz-Hansen teak desk (R12,500).

Among the attractive pieces in the collectabl­e section was a Shelley bone china tea service decorated in the Rock Garden pattern (R1,200); a rare 20th century Lladro porcelain figure (R1,700); an early 20th century Ruskin soufflé glazed vase (R800); and a mid-20th century miniature silver five-piece tea service (R1,200).
