Six paintings steal the show

• Collection of artworks by Irmin Henkel the main drawcard at decorative and fine arts sale in Waverley

A collection of six paintings by Irmin Henkel stole the show at the Westgate Walding Decorative & Fine Arts Sale in Waverley on Wednesday.

The works included a Still Life of Fruit and Flowers signed and dated 1975 (R55,000); Nude, a signed oil on canvas (unsold); Seated Nude, an oil on canvas dated 1970 (R65,000 ); and Still Life, Fruit and Flowers, an oil signed and dated 1975 (unsold).

US artist Annie Denton was represente­d by her signed oil on canvas work, Church Interior (R3,200).

Also in the five-figure price range was an Otto Klar oil on board, Mossel Bay, signed and dated 1952 (unsold).

There were a number of lithograph­s by British artist Rudolph Ackermann. One, The Battle of Gwanga, Cape of Good Hope, was published by Rudolph Ackermann, London, 1854 (R7,000).

Another British artist on offer was John Charles Robert D’Oyly. His signed oil on board, Fishermen, was unsold.

A photolitho­graph, Trees and Mountains, after JH Pierneef fetched R1,400.

Other artists of note included Robert Gwelo Goodman’s signed watercolou­r, Mediterran­ean Harbour (unsold) and Hennie Griesel, Still Life, signed and dated 1971, R4,600.

Also represente­d at the auction were Kenneth Baker (unsigned Penny Whistler R1,000), Dino Paravano signed pastel Impala at Water Hole R5,000); A van der Ploeg (oil on board, River in Mountainou­s Landscape, signed and dated 1958 R1,100), Andre de Beer (oil on board, signed and dated 1962, Rondavels in Landscape (R4,500) and Sydney Carter (pastel Cape Dutch Homestead), which failed to sell.

An unusual piece in the furniture section was a pair of 19thcentur­y elm yoke back chairs that fetched R16,000.

Good prices were fetched for mid-20th century Percival Lafer rosewood pieces. Two upholstere­d armchairs and ottomans fetched R13,500.

Two other upholstere­d armchairs fetched R10,000 and a rosewood-and-glass coffee table with upholstere­d frame was knocked down for R3,500.

Edwardian pieces included an inlaid mahogany bureau with hinged writing slope (R7,500).

George III pieces included a mahogany chest (R13,000) and George III mahogany pedestal dining table (unsold).

There were interestin­g Victorian pieces including a mahogany three-tier buffet (R3,200); a mahogany extension dining table (R13,500); a set of six mahogany dining chairs (R3,800); a large mahogany desk (R19,000) and a large rosewood centre table (R5,500).

Among the Belgian oak pieces were an early 20thcentur­y buffet (R4,200); a set of five 20th-century dining chairs (R2,400) and a 20th-century drinks cupboard (R3,200).

Dutch oak pieces included a side cabinet (R4,500) and an early 20th-century Dutch oak cabinet (R3,200).

In the collectibl­es section an Edwardian silver fish service by JB Sheffield received a bid of R1,400. Other pieces on offer were George V Adam style silver candlestic­ks (R4,500); an early Victorian silver ice pail WE&WN - Smith and Nicholson, London 1851 (R5,000); a mid20th-century silver four-piece tea service (R9,500) and a boxed set of 12 Christofle silverplat­ed bread plates with reed tie borders (unsold).

Other items of interest included a collection of 20thcentur­y Swarovsky crystal, a 20th-century Royal Albert bone china tea service, a 19th-century silver-and-glass epergne and 20th-century Bavarian porcelain dinner service.

In the jewellery section, an 18ct white gold eternity ring received a hammer price of R19,000 and a platinum and diamond ring, R12,000.

An 18ct white gold and diamond openwork dress received a hammer price of R15,500.

Other jewellery items included a pair of 18ct gold-anddiamond dress rings; a pair of 18ct white gold sapphire-anddiamond earrings and a matching 18ct gold ring; a certified loose 2.25ct square cushion cut tanzanite; an 18ct gold and diamond bar brooch and an 18ct gold diamondclu­ster brooch.

IN THE FURNITURE SECTION, A PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY ELM YOKE BACK CHAIRS FETCHED R16,000
