It is just shocking that Meyiwa’s killers are still on the loose

You have to wonder what goes through the minds of Senzo Meyiwa’s killers when South Africans commemorate the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates star’s death on October 26 every year.

Do these unrepentant thugs even feel an ounce of guilt when they see the outpouring of grief that has marked the date since Meyiwa was shot and killed during an alleged botched robbery at girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus three years ago?

Do these lowlifes read the many stories and heartwrenching messages that are written when Meyiwa’s family, friends and fans remember a life taken in its prime?

The gutless individual who actually pulled the trigger and his accomplice — we were told there were two of them — have remained in the shadows for three years and I’ve often wondered how those who know their identity are able to sleep at night while carrying such a dark secret.

Seriously folks, how does anyone look in the mirror without grimacing with revulsion when they know who killed a breadwinner, a father, a son and a brother in such a callous manner?

How does anyone wake up, brush their teeth, get dressed and then merrily go about their business without a care in the world when they know who is behind the senseless murder?

It doesn’t help that SA’s bungling law enforcement officials do not seem to be any closer to solving this crime and they have a better chance catching smoke with their hands than of actually bringing the killers to justice. One senses they’re too embarrassed to admit they’ve pretty much given up and this crime will probably follow the route of many other unsolved cases.

You understand where Meyiwa’s father, Sam, is coming from when he says the family is slowly losing hope of ever seeing his son’s killers brought to justice.

It’s absolutely crazy that this case has fizzled out into a whimper when SA’s top regional and national detectives were all over it at one stage.

Even the timid pigeons, errrrrr... the Hawks, were involved at one stage.

What hope do the rest of us have when the might of SA’s law enforcement agencies appear to have a better chance of sharing a bag of biltong with US president Donald Trump than of successfully bringing the murderers to justice?

South African Football Association CEO Dennis Mumble said a few days ago the police impotency was a difficult pill to swallow.

‘‘Clearly, this [the police silence] does not do justice to the family‚ first and foremost‚ that we are nowhere near finding out who it is that murdered Senzo Meyiwa. So, we really have to encourage the authorities to do a lot better than what is happening now.

‘‘But also for the public‚ if there is anybody out there with information to come forth to assist the police,” he said.

‘‘It’s a tragedy that we still do not have any answers or [are] anywhere near close to knowing what exactly happened on that night.”

Meyiwa’s gutless killers are out there and I imagine they’re pretty chuffed with themselves, given that they’ve managed to avoid justice after committing such a high-profile crime in front of several witnesses.

But we can all take solace in the fact that nothing stays hidden forever and no matter how long it takes, we will know one day who killed Meyiwa.

We will know who helped them cover up this crime and his family will finally get the answers they have been desperately seeking.
