Five things to watch this weekend
TOP BOY — NETFLIX Recalling Richard Price’s Clockers and David Simon’s The Wire this story of two warring druglords on the gritty streets of London holds its own thanks to stellar performances and a deeprooted sense of the specifics of its setting and the realness of its characters. It’s violent, unflinching but dramatically absorbing with a Shakespearean sense of destiny and hubris that makes for riveting watching.
RAMY — SHOWMAX Comedian Ramy Youssef stars in this offbeat but pertinent and empathetic comedy about a young Muslim man trying to navigate his identity as a firstgeneration US millennial in the Trump era and the pressures from his family and faith. The characters are sharply drawn, the jokes smart and knowing and the situations so absurd they have to come from real life.
UNDONE — AMAZON PRIME VIDEO Produced by the team responsible for BoJack Horseman this is a completely different but equally engaging animated series. Using Rotorscope animation the show poses some deep, philosophical questions about life, the universe and everything in its story of a woman who wakes up after surviving a car crash to discover she has a unique relationship with time and must work against the clock to find out what happened to her dad.
THE MIND, EXPLAINED — NETFLIX Anxiety, depression, memory and other mysteries of the little understood relationship between the brain and our feelings and thoughts are explored in this series. It combines interviews with experts and instructive animations to try to unravel the secrets and debunk some common myths about the trickiest of human characteristics.
UNBELIEVABLE — NETFLIX Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette give stellar performances in this drama based on the true story of the search for a serial rapist in the US. It’s not just another procedural though, because it is firmly focused on women and victims of sexual abuse and poses necessary and timely questions about the way society and law enforcement deal with their cases. /
