Malorie Blackman’s awardwinning series of Young Adult novels comes to the small screen in the BBC six-episode adaptation shot on location in Cape Town. The feature film debut of documentarian Liz Garbus is an antipolice police procedural on the victims of the notorious Long Island serial killer, who is still at large. Amy Ryan gives a gritty and determined performance as no-nonsense working-class mother Mari Gilbert, who, when her 24-year-old daughter Shannan goes missing, uses everything she has to fight the patriarchal indifference of the media and the local police as she searches for answers and justice.

IN AN ALTERNATIVE WORLD, THE MAJORITY WHITE POPULATION OF NOUGHTS OF ALBION ARE RULED OVER BY THE BLACK CROSSES

The complex and philosophically provocative show about robots created for human pleasure expands its world beyond the boundaries of the theme park in this third season. With a stellar cast and an intriguing set of big questions at its centre, Westworld continues to be one of the most thoughtful and creepy shows in the streaming universe. New episodes are available on Mondays.

THE VALHALLA MURDERS — Netflix

A solid slice of grim, existential Scandi-noir in which a feisty female Icelandic cop is paired with a coldly rational Norwegian male counterpart to race against the clock to solve a series of very personal and gruesome murders, while struggling to keep their personal lives in check.
