Five things to watch
DESTROYER — SHOWMAX
Nicole Kidman gives a surprisingly raw and rugged performance in this underrated revenge thriller. Kidman plays Los Angeles detective Erin Bell who suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder induced by a terrifying early experience as an undercover agent, which she must deal with when a tormentor from her past reappears.
[UN]WELL — NETFLIX
As the fear and uncertainty of Covid-19 lead to an explosion of conspiracy theories and alternative remedies online, this timely docuseries examines the darker side of a variety of alternative treatments. From essential oils to tantric sex, fasting and ayahuasca, (Un)well shows how trendy off-the-grid options may not all be as rosy and enlightening as many like to think.
WORLD’S MOST WANTED — NETFLIX
The shadowy kingpin of a Mexican drug cartel, the enthusiastic funder of Hutu militia during the Rwandan genocide, the British “white widow” Jihadi Samantha Lewthwaite and Italy’s last mafia godfather are among the nefarious characters in this docuseries, which tracks their infamous histories and police agencies’ efforts around the world to bring them to justice.
BRIARPATCH — SHOWMAX
Rosario Dawson stars in this eccentric crime noir series that features a host of kooky characters and plenty of eerie atmosphere. Dawson plays Allegra Dill, a woman determined to unravel the mystery of her sister’s death by returning to her Texas border town, to find that things are not what they used to be and no-one can be trusted in a place where the corruption and lies run deeper and darker than an oil well. New episodes are added weekly.
THE LAST NARC — AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
A four-part docuseries investigating the true story of US department of environmental affairs agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena who in 1985 was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by Mexican druglords. Featuring interviews with former cartel members, it offers new and gory details of the case and makes a compelling argument for Camarena to be belatedly but deservedly recognised for the important contribution that he made to the war on drugs at the height of the Ronald Reagan era, futile as it was.
