BLOOD BROTHERS: MALCOLM X AND MUHAMMAD ALI NETFLIX

They were friends for three brief years but the bond that Malcolm X and Muhammad Ai formed was deep and true. It was unfortunately broken by the fight between X and Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad during which Ali, to his eternal regret, made a fateful decision that would sour their relationship for what remained of Malcolm’s life before his assassination in 1965.

Through interviews with those closest to them and rare archival footage, director Marcus A Clarke paints a hopeful but tragic picture of a friendship between icons of the 20th century during a pivotal moment in the world.

TURNING POINT: 9/11 AND THE WAR ON TERROR NETFLIX

This five-episode docuseries offers an exhaustive, behindthe-scenes look at the fateful events of the tragic morning in New York 20 years ago and their reshaping consequences for the geopolitical map. In the wake of recent events in Afghanistan there is timely analysis here to chew on as we continue to live in an era shaped by attacks on US targets and the response to them.

OBAMA: IN PURSUIT OF A MORE PERFECT UNION SHOWMAX

The election of the 44th president of the US was an historic moment not only for that country but the world. As the depressing ultraconservatism of the Trump era seems to have set the US backwards, director Peter W Kunhardt delivers an epic three-part, five-hour docuseries about the life, times and legacy of his predecessor. It’ sa welcome reminder of a recent period that offered much hope, but ultimately could not overcome the deep-seated prejudices of a nation struggling to deal with the structural problems that led it to sabotage what promise Obama’s election may have offered.

MONEY HEIST SEASON 5: PART 1 NETFLIX

The smash-hit Spanish caper series returns for the first part of its final season with all the twisty, smart turns and surprises that have kept it a fan favourite. It’s a suitably entertaining and action-packed first goodbye to one of the most enjoyable shows in recent memory. The final five episodes are due in December.

SEE SEASON 2 APPLE TV+

It’s mostly for fans of the gravely voiced, macho, muscled pairing of stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, but if you like that sort of thing and can stand gory battles, then Apple’s dystopian series about fully sighted siblings in a world in which everyone else is blind, is for you.
