It’s now time to take back the city, urges Manuel

ANC NATIONAL executive member and party stalwart Trevor Manuel used Freedom Day to remind Mitchells Plain residents of their history within the ANC, and the role they played in fighting apartheid.

“Here in Rocklands we launched the UDF (United Democratic Front) with nothing but our strength, belief and determination,” he said at Glendale High School yesterday. “Now it’s time to use that same spirit to take back the city. The city is ours, and we will take it back.”

He urged people to recommit themselves to the ANC, to knock on people’s doors and campaign to guarantee a victory for the ANC in the local government elections, particularly the City of Cape Town.

“We will win the elections ward by ward in the city,” Manuel promised.

He compared ANC members to international football team Real Madrid, which he said worked hard to win the King’s Cup, only to have their captain drop the silver trophy during their celebrations. The ANC had lost that spirit and drive to “fight”, which he blamed for the loss of the city and the province to the DA.

“We had the trophy and we dropped it. We now need to connect with that spirit we had in 1994, and we must never ever let this happen in the ANC again.”

Manuel also acknowledged that the ANC had a long way to go in terms of delivering to the people, and said they needed to recommit themselves in terms of rectifying some of their mistakes.

But he encouraged residents not to stop supporting and working for the ANC, saying the elders needed to teach their children about the past.

ANC mayoral candidate for Cape Town Tony Ehrenreich commended the residents and ANC members from Mitchells Plain who had supported the party throughout, urging them to continue their support.

He said people should use Freedom Day to honour those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom that South Africans enjoyed today.

“There is still so much that needs to be done, and we know it can be done under the ANC,” Ehrenreich said.
