Why our Charlize is just wicked

- BAZ BAMIGBOYE

CHARLIZE Theron summoned every bit of strength and breath and bellowed: “Out!” She was giving me a demonstration of how her character, the wicked Queen Ravenna, behaves in the

film Snow White And The Huntsman, which has just finished shooting in London.

“It’s ‘Out!’ as in ‘Go out and bring her to me’,” the South African actress explained, putting further strain on her vocal cords.

The Oscar-winning star had been apologising for her croaky voice, caused by all that shouting and exacerbated by aircraft air-conditioning.

Theron had been in the running for a Golden Globe for her performance in Jason Reitman’s black comedy Young

Adult, but lost out to Michelle Williams’s knockout portrait of Marilyn Monroe in My Week

With Marilyn.

I was surprised her name wasn’t on the Bafta list of best actress nominations, because what she does in that film with the part of Mavis, a writer trying to survive on her limited talent and a tin ear, is amazing. There’s something marvellous about watching the beautiful car wreck that is Mavis. “She’s not had the right tool set to deal with things in the right way,” Theron said. “She tries to put the square into the circle.”

Mavis’s behaviour towards people is outrageous, but Theron’s performance helps you understand why she’s the way she is. As a younger woman, men would fall at Mavis’s feet. Now they run because she can’t hide the fact that she’s a harridan. The film opens next month. – Daily Mail
