Hi-tech help offered to pupils rewriting their matric exams
THE WESTERN Cape Education Department (WCED) will be offering free tuition to matric candidates who have qualified for the supplementary exams.
Education MEC Donald Grant said 5 850 candidates had qualified.
Registration would close on January 24 and the exams were set to start on February 9.
The tuition programme will include revision lessons to be broadcast via satellite on the province’s telematics system to 145 schools across the province.
This system was originally set up by the WCED and Stellenbosch University to provide extra tuition for Western Cape matrics.
“Expert teachers will provide quality lessons via satellite to candidates who have registered to write the supplementary exams,” Grant said.
The sessions will cover seven subjects – maths, physical science, accounting, geography, life sciences, English first additional language and Afrikaans home language.
The tuition programme is expected to run from February 7 until March 8.
“Candidates who wish to register for these lessons can do so by contacting any of the 145 schools offering the programme.”
Grant said candidates who didn’t have access to any of the 145 schools could buy support lessons on DVDS from the WCED at a nominal price.
“I encourage candidates who qualify to write supplementary examinations to register and take advantage of the tuition available to them.”
