Remove al-assad, but beware of external players

- Abdullah Saeed Pietermaritzburg

THE AUTOCRATIC rule of Bashar alAssad in Syria must be removed.

The Syrian people began their uprising against the al-assad regime for political reforms and a life of dignity for all.

Unfortunately, the Syrian uprising is progressively being deprived of its own ingenuity and is moving towards a prolonged civil war.

If the Syrian people don’t weed out the self-serving external and internal players, probably, the Syrian uprising will fall under foreign dictates.

The external pressure on the Syrian regime is not to establish human rights or democracy but to protect Israel and clear the path to attack Iran.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has accused China and Russia of “betraying the Syrian people” by vetoing a UN resolution condemning violence there. Where is the criticism of the American government when it uses its veto power to protect Israel?

Since its creation in 1948, Israel with full American support has been violating many UN resolutions.

The American government has used its veto power numerous times to stop the UN from passing any resolution that would condemn or criticise Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestin- ian land and Israeli behaviour towards the Palestinians.

Furthermore, despite the gross destruction and huge loss of human lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and the dreadful effects of war and armed conflict, the rumblings of war against Iran are becoming louder every day.
