End of our favourite pastime a reel shame

- L MACLEOD

WHAT a shame it is that our much-loved Cinema Nouveau at Cavendish is closing down.

I’m wondering why there was no public participation in the decision process, because I am sure the owners of the mall would have heard many pleas for them not to go ahead with their action.

We have come to know the people working at Cinema Nouveau at Cavendish very well over the years and will miss our friendly chats with them, their smiling faces and their super-efficient service.

So many patrons like me and others will be very adversely affected by the closure, especially having to trek all the way to the Waterfront to see a movie in the future.

It was so convenient to just pop to in to see a good movie at Cinema Nouveau at Cavendish after work on the way home.

Our favourite thing to do nearly every Saturday was to come to Cavendish early, book tickets at Cinema Nouveau for the movie we wanted to see, then spend about an hour dashing from one shop to another and afterwards have dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

I – and many others I know – do not frequent the commercial movie houses.

What a great shame that the owners of the Cavendish mall could not have accommodated the new retailer lessee where Primi Piatti used to be, or perhaps even have relocated Cinema Nouveau there.

I understand the owners’ economic decision, but surely they know that South Africa’s senior citizen population – many of whom frequent Cinema Nouveau – is increasing not decreasing.
