Supplementary exam deadline
CANDIDATES who would like to make use of a second chance to earn their matric qualification have just more than a week left to apply for the supplementary exams.
A total of 6 698 Western Cape candidates have qualified for the exams, which will be written in February and March. The deadline for applications is January 21.
Yesterday, several 2012 matric pupils, some with their parents, queued at the Western Cape Education Department’s client service cen- tre. Some hoped to apply for supplementary exams and the centre also assisted candidates who wanted to apply to have scripts remarked or rechecked.
Lwandile Mabutyana, 19, from Khayelitsha, was filling in a form to apply for the supplementary exams in life sciences and geography.
“Life sciences was difficult. I want to get my certificate. I will study hard.”
Razia May, 18, who attended Grassy Park High, said she had applied to rewrite English home language.
“I would like to study human resources management. I just want to boost my English marks,” she said.
Education MEC Donald Grant said candidates could qualify to write supplementary exams if they had failed a maximum of two subjects or they had missed an exam for medical reasons and could provide a medical certificate.
“Candidates can also apply to have their scripts remarked for subjects they have failed or where they did not obtain the results they needed for specific purposes, for example to obtain a bursary or to satisfy university requirements.”
Applications for remarking would also be considered if there was a difference of at least two levels of achievements between marks awarded by

He said candidates had to include a motivation with their application for a remark. Applications for remarks will also close on January 21.
Grant also encouraged 2012 matric candidates who had failed and didn’t qualify for supplementary exams to enrol in Grade 12 again this year.
For enquiries, candidates can visit the client service centre in Grand Central Building, Lower Parliament Street, Cape Town, or call the exams helpline on 021 467 2300 on weekdays between 8am and 4pm until January 31.
