RVP talk will fire up City strikers

- Chris Wheeler

CARLOS TEVEZ claims that talk of Robin van Persie deciding this season’s title race will only inspire Manchester City’s strikers to outgun the Dutchman.

Both Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini have said in recent weeks that Manchester United’s £24 million signing is turning out to be the difference between the two clubs, with Van Persie leading the Premier League scoring charts with 16 goals.

City’s strike force of Sergio Aguero, Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli have struggled by comparison, scoring 25 in total between them.

Asked whether the tributes to Van Persie could act as an incentive to City after they lost out in the race to sign him from Arsenal, Tevez said: “Those words were a motivation for the strikers. We know that we need to carry on fighting.”

City came from eight points behind with six games left to win the title last season, and Tevez is convinced they can overturn United’s current seven-point lead.

The Argentina striker added: “Yes, there’s a long way to go and a lot of games to play. That’s the emotion of the Premier League. It’s always a fight to the end, and if United lose one game, we’ll be getting close to them.

“They know that. It also happened last season that United then lost some games and we were back on track so we will keep doing our job.” – Daily Mail
