Cyclist, 54, dies of apparent heart attack

A 54-YEAR-OLD man died of a suspected heart attack while cycling along Otto du Plessis Drive in Milnerton yesterday.

Cape Town Traffic Service’s Maxine Jordaan said the traffic centre was alerted around 7.35am yesterday. The man had not been identified. Emergency Medical Services’ Keri Davids said EMS paramedics were not activated and police called forensic pathologis­ts to the scene.

Provincial police spokesmanW­arrant Officer November Filander said police would open an inquest docket if the person was found to have suffered a heart attack.

News of the death of a cyclist in Milnerton near Woodbridge Island spread on cycling chat site The Hub, with many subscriber­s offering condolence­s to the man’s family.

A post by Decapod_Crew said: “Saw the accident scene, medics already there... no car involved it seemed… lots of bikes in the bushes off the cycling path… condolence­s to the family of the cyclist.”

Another post by mdk555 said: “When we went past there, all we saw was the dreaded white cloth over the body. R.I.P.” Meanwhile, Cippo said: “Afaik it was a suspected heart attack and not a crash. RIP.”

The Pedal Power Associatio­n (PPA) has encouraged cyclists to take extra care with their health and safety when they head out.

The PPA’s Stephen Hayward encouraged riders to have regular check-ups before big races.
