POLICE SEIZE R1.5MOF DRUGS, 1 667 HELD

Suspects arrested in ‘most affected areas’ of the city

POLICE in the Western Cape have seized more than R1.5 million worth of drugs in one week and arrested 1 667 people in connection with drugrelate­d crimes.

The majority of arrests – 179 – were in Mitchells Plain.

Bishop Lavis had 71 arrests, while 69 suspects were nabbed in Manenberg.

R1 576 874.07 worth of drugs were confiscate­d last week, including: ● Cocaine – R593 631 ● Tik – R513 328.75 ● Dagga – R235 161.91 In addition to Mitchells Plain and Bishop Lavis, the other areas targeted by police last week – considered among the “most affected areas” – included Delft, Kleinvlei, Gugulethu, Grassy Park, Atlantis, Kraaifonte­in and Steenberg.

The sum total of last week’s drug seizures published in the Cape Argus forms part of a LeadSA initiative: a collaborat­ion between the Cape Argus, 567 CapeTalk, 94.5 Kfm and various Western Cape law enforcemen­t agencies.

Since its launch on November 26, the police have confiscate­d R8 127 752.55 worth of drugs and have arrested 12 588 people on drugrelate­d charges.

The campaign’s aim is to highlight efforts by law enforcemen­t agencies to clamp down on drugs.

In one of the more recent busts, Flying Squad members seized R1m worth of drugs and arrested two men in Lingelethu West on Friday.

drug activities” at a house in Giyo Street.

Police searched the premises and found pure cut cocaine, blocks of cocaine, tik, a scale, 301 yellow capsules containing cocaine, and an undisclose­d amount of cash.

A 33-year-old man and a 33-yearold woman who live in the area were arrested.

The two are expected to appear in the Khayelitsh­a Magistrate’s Court today.

Also on Friday, police arrested a 45- year- old man in connection with drug dealing after the suspect went to the police station the previous day to report a case of attempted murder.

Provincial police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said that on Thursday at around 9.30pm the man had told Mfuleni police that shots were fired at his house earlier that same day.

Early on Friday morning, when the investigat­ing officer questioned two men who had allegedly fired shots at the house, they told police that they went to the house to buy drugs.

The suspects explained here had been a quarrel and the complainan­t had fired shots at them, according to Filander.

Police searched the house and found 50 half mandrax tablets, a sachet of tik, a 9mm bullet, a spent cartridge and an undisclose­d amount of cash.

While police were searching the house, two shots were fired in the house.

No firearm was found, but police arrested a 23-year-old and a 27-yearold in connection with the shooting in the house.

The complainan­t was arrested and charged for drug dealing, the unlawful possession of ammunition, Filander said. Charges of defeating the ends of justice and perjury may be added.

The three suspects are expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court today.
