Guineas target for Kannemeyer’s sta

- MICHAEL CLOWER

DEAN Kannemeyer, who has won the Cape Guineas five times in the past nine seasons, is optimistic that he will again have at least one leading candidate by the time of the Kenilworth classic on 21 December.

He said: “My horses are a week or two behind at the moment because of the weather and I haven’t really exposed my three-year-olds but I’ve got some with lots of potential.”

One of these is Solar Star, a Kahal colt who created a big impression when winning on debut at Kenilworth in July, drawing away in the final furlong to win easily.

Kannemeyer said: “He is a big immature horse and I put him away straight after his win. He has plenty of potential but I don’t yet know how good he is. I am getting him ready at the moment and he should be able to start early next month.”

The Milnerton trainer also mentioned Power King who made a winning debut at Clairwood in the second half of July but some of those who he believes will not come up to scratch have already been weeded out. These include Cape of Good Hope Nursery runner-up Tiger Island and dual winner Kremlin Captain. Both have been sold to Mauritius.
