Event unleashes creativity on the city

- HELEN HERIMBI

THE ANNUAL Creative Week Cape Town is in full swing. Until Sunday, regular Capetonians as well as those creative beings among us can check out showcases of the best the city has to offer when it comes to design, food, culture, photography and even the digital sphere.

The tagline for this year’s event-packed week is: Turn the City Inside Out. For some experiences you may be charged a fee, but there is something free every day.

Another interesting facet of Creative Week is a project called Streets With People From All Over. On a wall on the corner of Commercial and Canterbury streets is a map that’s been painted by signwriter Bisho Bilele. The information he’s used on the map is based on Andrew Putter’s tireless pursuit to get people to write down what parts of the world they’ve come from. The point is to show how, while everyone may have a different background, they share the same street and, therefore, the same planet. The wall can be viewed all week.

As a part of City Explorations series, photographer Ed Suter ( pictured) – who recently published his street style book, Sharp Sharp – will discuss his working process and take those who are interested on a walkabout when they are free to take pictures. Please bring your own camera.

There will be a moonlight mass bicycle movement on Thursday. It will be followed by Cycle Cinema screenings presented by The Shnit International Film Festival at Greenmarket Square Methodist Church.

The Twenty Fifty co-working space is offering small teams as well as creative individuals space to work from for Creative Week. There will be several food pop-up shops in the CBD – including a tutorial on how to make a gluten-free pizza.

Once again, the artist Falko will be involved with the week; this time he will be working on a mural that depicts the marriage between street art and graffiti on Harrington Street.

In the past couple of years, the week has acted as a hook on which the advertising industry’s best-known honours ceremony, the Loerie Awards, hangs its hat. The awards take place on Saturday.

As is the norm, the week will feature a few parklets (when a parking lot is transformed into a mini-park) around the city in honour of International Park Day on Friday.

Creative Week Cape Town takes place at various spaces in the city. Full diary of events: www.creativeweekct.co.za.
