Alleged gang-related shooting injures four

- Yolisa Tswanya

A NUMBER of gang-related shootings have rocked Mitchells Plain this year and although four people were shot this past weekend it was reasonably quiet.

Valerie Moses, of the Mitchells Plain Neighbourhood Watch, said they received calls about all the shootings in the area and despite three separate incidents being reported to them the past weekend was quiet in comparison to other weekends.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut said three men and one woman were injured when they were shot at early yesterday morning.

“(They) were shot and injured when two armed men entered their residence in Renoster Street, Mitchells Plain and shot at them.”

Traut said the circumstances surrounding the incident was was under investigation and no one has been arrested yet.

The victims were between 17 and 24 years old.

Moses said they believed that the shootings in the area were gang related and they were between two rival gangs.

“Saturday was quiet according to our stats. Sunday night I also heard of a drive-by shooting but I can’t say how many were injured.”

Moses said all shooting related incidents come through their office and said although there are a number of gangs in the area, two are the main culprits in the shootings.

“It’s mostly between the Hard Livings and the Americans. It’s not so much the other gangs like the Crazy Kids.

“Most times it’s just these two gangs and they are actually recruiting these young boys and that is more heart sore.”

Moses added that one victim who was shot yesterday, was found on the ground with a firearm next to him, prompting her to link it to gang activity.
