Mental Health: R4 billion for plane for Zuma, R5 billion bailout for SAA, no funds for mentally ill patients. Reason defies logic. Zuma and ANC are more important than the people of South Africa. – Gina D, Cape Town

I agree with Richard Benson that a 13th cheque will be most welcome. What we are getting is far too little. Pensioners must stand together like the students. #PensionsMustRise! – Irene Arendse, Lansdowne

What nonsense is this about pensioners? Extra money for Christmas? What money are we going to use for our Christmas shopping? We can’t even buy food from what we get. – Sulaman Brown, Wynberg

Richard Benson, shall we also give a 13th cheque to all the mothers of 21 years of age who have three or four kids and receive the Sassa child grant for each child, as well? They, too, are beneficiaries and undoubtedly in need also. Goodness, baby manufacture is then so lucrative; a tax-free business. Sorry mate, no 13th cheque. – Clive Stephenson, Wynberg

Popcru threatens a “go-slow” every time a police officer is killed. The question is, will we notice the go-slow with service levels being as low as they are? – SR van Wyk, Oranjezicht

Conflict of ideologies causes irrelevant quarrels. So what then is the underlying objective of an aggressive force? To control the masses? – Gary Morley, Parklands

That a small minority of students can, through intimidation and violence, force their preferences and demands on the majority, is once again proof of weak leadership that can only take the country further along the road to anarchy. English? Cecil John Rhodes has not fallen, his colonial legacy has surpassed his wildest imagination. – Tom Hancock, Riebeek West

I agree with Richard Benson. Sassa only gives a R10 increase; they can at least give a 13th cheque. Most pensioners can do with it at this time of the year. Pensioners should stand together and fight for it. – Doris Rich, Lansdowne

Naushad Omar asserts that the context of the Paris attacks is an ongoing neocolonial domination of the world by various powers. I am sorry, but there is just too much academic grey-area in that claim for it to justify random mass-murder. Muslim leaders are right to condemn acts of terror, not because of some notion of guilt by association, but because the terrorists claim – with presumptuous arrogance – to act on behalf of Islam. It is right that Muslims are outraged by that. If we all just stopped imagining battle-lines and allegiances based on our gods and our skin-colour, we would have a lot less to kill for. – Gareth

Austin, Pinelands

To Richard Benson, I disagree. Do you understand the term “bonus”? A bonus is not a right, it is presented for diligence, performance and profits achieved. You seem to think like the ANC. There are no free lunches – leave that to the government. They are masters at the game. See what it has done to this country. – Peter Boettger, Hout Bay

It is really sad that crazy jihadist groups achieve nothing but only tarnish the name of Islam. – Les Barendse, Mitchells Plain. Siyabonga Bavu: This story needs some context: 1) Students have not been evicted by anyone but the vice-chancellor posted a rumour on Facebook that scared the living daylights out of students who’ve been shot at by police. 2) The vice-councillor and council signed resolutions with student leadership. Now they’re not implementing these resolutions and are acting like the students are mad for protesting. Anyway, being judged by the privileged for fighting for a better future for myself and others like me won’t even deter me from my goal in the slightest.
