THEY came from all over and dressed up to see the second leg of the Rugby Sevens World Series in the city. Yesterday and on Saturday, the Blitzboks and 15 other countries played in front of a packed Cape Town Stadium during the second leg of the series.

The third leg of the series will be staged in Wellington, New Zealand, on January 30 and 31.

South African, US, Kenyan, England and a number of flags from the other competing nations filled the stadium over the two days.

More than 106 000 people attended the event. The event was held for the first time in Cape Town over the weekend.

Fans dressed up for the occasion – there was a Wonder Woman and a fan dressed as North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un… in full military attire.

On Saturday, the Blitzboks, even though losing to Kenya, qualified for yesterday’s knockout stages.

They played Argentina in the final, much to the delight of the approximately 52 000 fans, and beat them 29-14.

Former Proteas fast bowler Allan Donald shared his experience on Twitter: “What a stadium and you simply can’t beat the atmosphere in here. Sevens series in Cape Town.”

Another Twitter user, Denean Albertus also shared her experience: “You know it’s a rugby game when my team scores a try and I just end up hugging another random stranger.”
